What's new

Thoughts on the BackBit Platinum cartridge?

It's not out till April (assuming there are no delays) My $0.02 on it is, expect speed bumps. Anyone who did anything on Neo Geo knows how volatile the system is. Issues with multislot quirks, beat up PCBs that were neglected by coin ops in smoke filled arcades, issues with power supplies and poorly consolized systems, AliExpress specials and code issues the developer hasn't even thought of yet.

All these issues effects the Darksoft cart, NeoSD, NeoSD Pro and even the Vortex 161-in-1 modified cart at some point. I've seen some YT videos on this cart recently where the tester had audio issues on multislot and other quirks that he was hoping will be fixed by shipping day.

At $500 USD (the real cost of the cart after the initial backers get theirs) I hope the bugs are worked out because we don't have a good shipping SD solution at this time for Homebrew and developers to test their code on real hardware.

Technically the pro 4 slot terraonion links.

I think you have to have two.

I've seen it done I don't have any more info.

It looks like a sweet spot of having a multi like the TO/DS carts, but A. less expensive, and B. (theoretically) availability is better. I purchased one to get the discount, but it also doesn't come out until April like Leon mentioned. I figure some of those speedbumps will (hopefully?) be addressed by then.

If it doesn't work out, Ive still got my Vortex cart lol. But it would be nice to have something that you can just slap ROMs into, especially with the recent conversions like Shinobi/Golden Axe, and that Double Dragon One game that's coming out.

To be clear, I have a Darksoft multi-MVS along with a bunch of different x in 1 type carts. But I too am looking for something I can just throw ROMs onto and the link cable capability would be welcome since I have two arcade cabinets. Still debating...

Not much to debate in that case then @Kujako . It's the only actual hardware solution that lets you do that.

DS format is cumbersome and you're not free to work within the menu. The vortex carts require redoing half the work again, and with to you're just at their mercy for about anything so I hear. Mame or mister are options but you wouldn't be looking at multicarts at all if they were an acceptable route.

I mean... if we want to split hairs I have two MiSTers, an Analogue Pocket and even a OG MiST. It's possible I just like collecting these sorts of things.

Despite already having a few options to play Neo Geo games on original hardware and for reasons already mentioned I preordered one of these carts too ;
all things considered it is pretty reasonable deal

I just ordered one the other day. This is my first multi that isn't a 161 in 1.
I was never too keen on the NeoSD, and the price was right..does anyone have experience with backbit stuff? I've never heard of them until this cart.

Coming from the LeonK/Rewrite Vortex carts, one drawback I will say is that this still has to load the game and is not instantaneous like the Vortex carts. But honestly 12 seconds for the larger games like Garou is really not that big of a deal. Evie has shown some of the earlier games loading in like 2 seconds.

Technically, the 161-in-1 has flash memory. That's why you're able to rewrite them.

Does the Backbit cartridge hold the game in memory when powered off? Maybe that isn't flash at all.

My dream cart would something that mimics a 6-slot MVS. It could hold up to six games (I would be OK if didn't have enough memory to hold six of the biggest games). It would have extra button inputs for game select up and down. It would cycle the games in attract like a multislot MVS.

Sigh.

It does not. A YT video review specifically called this out. Unlike NeoSD that retains the game after power off, the backbit needs to be reprogrammed every time.

Flash programming is slow. NeoSD uses flash. This device I assume uses SRAM to hold all the game data, which is faster than flash but doesn't hold data without power.

ROM vs flash memory. It's a choice. Speed is a difference, but versatility too, you can never change the games easily on a vortex like cart, while you can on the others.
For some arcade collectors, that's not a big deal. They don't care about game hacks, homebrew or ports. For some collectors, the last "official" release came out over 20 years ago. Than again, many of these guys I know have 0 interest in multicarts, Vortex carts or anything but the original ones. :)

When I had A. room and B. funds, I'd definitely have preferred to have each cart. For a while I had a good 25 or 30 of my favorite games. But due to limited space, and the insanity that is "retro gaming" pricepoint - Im good with a single cart with all the goodies. Plus selling most of the carts I had was able to fund stuff like a MiSTer, and another cab.

Or you can do what I do.. rent a storage unit with the hope that your kids would move out when they go to university and not come back. :)

I have a complete NES collection which I haven't seen in >20 years, over 200 consoles (many CIB), dozens of retro PCs and much much more in that unit. Don't get me wrong about multicarts - I own pretty much every one ever made and ones most people don't know even exist but I understand where you're coming from.

You can't add any new games or hacks to the Vortex cart.
