This thread is a definitive conversion guide for all the possible games you can make on Taito F3 single board "cheap" donor games:
  • Taito Cup Finals
  • Taito Super Cup Finals
  • Top Ranking Stars / Prime Time Fighters

First of all, I want to show you the differences in the games / boards they went out on market (exposing the mask memory sizes they can work with):

Taito F3 Super Cup Finals White + Expand (basically they are Prime Time Fighters / Top Ranking Stars on the motherboard, but Taito Super Cup Finals in the Expand board):

- 2 x ENSONIQ 27c160 sound masks
- Graphics are the same in both sections of the board (main board and Expand):

- 4 x 27c160 Sprites maks
- 2 x 27c160 Sprites HIGH mask
- 2 x 27c160 Tiles masks
- 1 x 27c160 Tiles HIGH mask

After all this previous info, we have to difference another determining factor between conversions: the ENSONIQ system V1-V2.

The ENSONIQ V1 is the first sound system present in many games, as an example: Ring Rage, Riding Fight, Taito Cup Finals...
The ENSONIQ V2 is the "evolution" of the previous system, which works differently with the high audio sections of ENSONIQ mask roms. As an example: Light Bringer, Rayforce and all of the Taito F3 red cartridge games. Any ENSONIQ V2 game on ENSONIQ V1 board is going to make audio bugs, a mod on the board is needed (explained next).

Any original orange board game is expensive right now (except for Taito Super Cup Finals conversions in Orange + Expand).

So the better solution for making a conversion game is using any Taito Cup Finals / Super Cup Finals or Prime Time Fighters / Top Ranking Stars (this last game has upped its price in the past months, but is another option).

- Factory ENSONIQ V1, for ENSONIQ V2 it needs a mod (explained next)

Depending on the game, is needed to change some PALs for MAIN CPU / SOUND CPU / ENSONIQ mode.

For 27c4001 Main CPU, D66-12:

Now this is the real tasty improvement for making a Taito Cup Finals a full compatible board with ENSONIQ V2 games without sound bugs.

This discovery could be possible thanks to studying the pinouts of a Orange + Expand, Normal White and Top Ranking Stars board (V2 factory prepared). So let's see what is needed:

TESTED MOD OF FULLY CONVERTING A TAITO CUP FINALS WHITE BOARD ENSONIQ V1 TO ENSONIQ V2.

First we make 2 cuts under IC20 MB8421

Very impressive work!

In your investigations have you discovered the reason why Gridseeker does not run properly on the F3 @Tailsnic Retroworks ?
It does work properly. On a Taito Cup Finals board, you don't need to change any PAL by default. Only you need to apply the 2 fixed mask roms instead of the ones on the official mame dump. I have mine working perfectly fine.

You mean on a red cartridge version? What happens to that game in other format?
 
Yes the MASK ROM fix is applied.

In graphic terms, nothing. Only a extented TTL - PAL logic system for passing from 4-2-Sprites-2-1-Tiles distribution to 8-4-Sprites-4-2 Tiles distribution
