I'm starting to accept that I should probably part with my beloved Egret 2, gaming has become a luxury I seldom have.

I bought this Egret 2 in 2010 in France from a then well known reseller who imported retired cabs from Japanese game centers and refurbished them. It then travelled with me to New Zealand.

Before I fully commit to selling, I was curious as to how much these go for these days (for now ignore that it's in New Zealand).

Cosmetically it's not perfect, but honestly pretty good (see pictures).

Currently equipped with:
  • original Toshiba monitor (burn free and scratch free)
  • Wei-Ya C3129A tri-sync chassis (yeah, I know, but I needed 31Khz at some point) BUT I do have the original Nanao MS9-29, see below
  • original Taito power supply (+ beefy stepdown converter for 220V countries)

Comes with the following spares and accessories on the side:
  • a pair of Taito 43cm stools (mint)
  • 2 x Nanao MS9-29 chassis with remotes
  • original Taito Stereo Amplifier (this one: https://wiki.arcadeotaku.com/w/Taito_Stereo_Amp)
  • original Taito Power Supply (spare)
  • MiSTercade v1 full kit (with DE10-Nano + 128Mb SDRam) + accessories (top/bottom plates, remote v1 & v2, control breakout, admin breakout, 2p encoder board)
  • RPI2Jamma (from aje_fr) + Raspberry Pi 3
  • JAMMAizer v1 (from arthrimus) + 2 x PS360+ + usb/playstation/dreamcast cables
  • JNX Raiden (from Jamma-Nation-X) CPS1/CPS2 to MK kick harness adapter
  • Spare 2L12B repro control panel (from alberto1225)

The AUS market may be comparable to NZ? The last few here sold between $2.5k-$3.5k AUD, then add all your spares and bits on top 👍

Wow, that's quite a difference between the AUS and USA markets, almost 3x! Are these cabs especially cheap in AUS, or especially expensive in the USA?

Candy cabinet prices in the US are in a world of their own, the poor dudes! Europe is similar to Australia, half the price of the US or less.

Ten years ago you'd have had an EII in Europe for €1,500 and a lot of people would probably have thought you were crazy as you could have had an Astro or an AWSD for €800 or so instead.

They're a little under double that now or thereabouts but still a lot less than our US friends have to pay.

I think supply over there is just tiny in comparison.

USA market is crazy overpriced, but it’s like a case of “too late to the party” so if you want to join you pay the asking entry price.

E2s and other candy used to be $500 AUD odd back in the day and containers of them were shipped over to AUS. Candy was deemed worthless in Japan and often shipped to China to be dismantled for parts.

Mass shipments to the USA happened years later and the demand and lessening stock saw the price rise, so people in the USA became accustomed to “overpaying”.

Same crazy price difference happens for all candy… things that are common here like Astros or Blasts max out at $2-2.5k AUD, yet in the USA often sell for double. 🤷‍♂️

I see. Now it makes me curious about how rare Egret 2s are in NZ. Candy cabs are not frequent here, and when you find one it's usually an Astro or a Blast. I have never seen an Egret cab here myself.

Not sure if there are any NZ specific arcade forums? Could be worth checking for likewise Facebook groups.

Looking there should help you determine what the current market is like, and hopefully help you decide if you can sell locally or have to look to sell abroad 👍

Yeah, there was a time when candies in the US were not nearly as bad as they are now.

I got AWSD for 850 and project for 500....Neo Candy's for 7-800, astro projects for 300......the barcade and home markets exploded here, and took the candies, the really nice stand-ups and the pinball scene markets with them, straight to the stratosphere.

I mean a 25" amplifone Star Wars cockpit will run you 7K+ for a clean one, and a super clean Addams Family or Twilight Zone are in the 11-12K USD range.

Everything is expensive here.

On top of all that, I think average salaries and taxes between countries come into play a bit too.

The average salary here in Ireland is $50,000 compared to $64,000 in the US.

We pay 40% tax on anything we earn over $46,000, whereas you guys pay just 22% on anything up to $100k.

Capital gains tax here in Ireland is also a whopping 33%.

So yeah, in a roundabout way, our leanings towards socialism and heavy tax might do a bit to keep our candy cabinet prices down too - nobody can fecking afford higher prices! :D

Is 40% the final number in Ireland? 22% is about right for Federal tax only, but then we have to pay things like social security, state tax, property tax, medicare tax etc. Our short term cap gains is the same as regular income. Long term cap gains (held for over 1 year) is 15% - 20% Federal. All in taxes are roughly 28% - 38% all said and done.

VERY cool Egret!

My precious
I'm sure theres a Lord of the rings jokes that could be used

Well, now I have another reason to visit New Zealand. Unfortunately I don't think this will qualify as a carry on for the return flight. 😭

I'm *supposed* to relocate to California for work in about a couple of years or so. So I have the option of selling it in NZ now, or waiting to be in the USA. Hmm...
