Hi, I bought Heavens Gate PCB, condition is verry good and clean, game plays fine but there are missing sound effects, stage music plays fine. Any ideas what's wrong? Thank you!

Sound effects are done on the top board for this game. The extra 68000 etc handles it.
Will be tricky to repair i think...

Music is done by the motherboard.

There's a couple of op-amps / caps etc on the top board worth checking.
Also the GAL are dumped so there is easy things to check.

Normally i would offer to take a look but got no workshop right now :(

I fired it up again and had some burning smell coming from the PCB but game still works without any new issues

Yikes, i would not run it if that's the case you will make things worse!!!
Any indication of where the burn is coming from?

Without a scope it will be tricky to debug!
First stop would be scope at the OP-amps in the left corner.

Any chance you could dump the 27c040's? (17b /18b) these seem to be a new version?

Unfortunately no :(

The 2 mask roms next to the YM. but if they were dead you would get crackling noise and or corrupted samples.
Problem will be op-amp area, YM, or the 68000 and it's ram / pld's. (or a dead line etc)

Without a scope or something to probe the sound it's a bit of a crapshoot...

OK. Thank you :)

I bought another PCB but it does not boot, it freezes when green pattern shows up on screen. I took the top part and swapped it and its working, all sound effects and music works so I took the roms and swapped them with ones from top board that had no sound effects and all works now, so I assume that the program roms where dead on the first one, but I noticed that the sound is not clean, there are some cracks in the sound, I took them back to the og board and tested and there are these cracks in the sound as well, so what's wrong with those roms? Can they be rewritten and will that fix the issue?

Yes, green line means problem loading game, so probably the program roms as you found.

About the sound, the speech samples on this game are a little crackly anyway due to the low sample rate :(

But both B board work on one mobo and on second one both are stuck on green pattern

On mame sound is clean, on PCB is loud garbage along with the sound, mostly when inserting coin and announcer, weird is when I go to SE test mode these sounds play clean

Green means loading game so , probably work ram or buffers if you have narrowed it down to the bottom board. also maybe a loose pin on the CPU etc.

I have been after a heavens gate for a while if the 2nd set is going spare now you have one running ;)

That's how it is... had one years ago and the speech is all muffled.
You could go about re-capping the mainboard but i think not worth the bother unless it's really bad...

Ah you will also get stuck on the green if the keychip / bios does not match the game. Make sure the bios / cat chip numbers on the motherboard matches your worker.
