I picked up another cps3 board on yahoo japan €278

This one had an original sf3 new generation cart working on battery. It's mint.

Are there reprogramming methods for dead carts nowadays or battery free mods like infinity for cps3 carts? If not I will get a new repro multi cart and keep this original as-is changing the battery.

I'd personally avoid using the jig (or hot swapping in general) and use a helper battery instead. I'm speaking from experience on both ends. But we've done that discussion to death many times before. ;) To each their own!

You can also convert that to a Darksoft BIOS, effectively making it a multi cartridge. There isn't much interest in New Generation whatsoever, and you can play it with a Darksoft BIOS, so not much point in keeping it original (IMO).

I've spoken to a former Capcom service tech (verified, not cosplaying) who claimed to still have the means to reprogram the carts, but when I inquired about reprogramming a 3S cart, I got ghosted.

Considering arcades can't get them reprogrammed in Japan, I would be surprised if Capcom still had the means.

Also, zero point in killing original carts since you can get repro ones now (IMO, of course).

I suspect Capcom might not, but in this case, it was a third-party who used to work for Capcom in the US, prior to their Arcade division shutting down. He kept all of the service manuals, equipment, and dead stock replacement parts when that went down (I saw photos). He claimed to be one of the people responsible for reprogramming dead CPS2 boards, which led me to ask about CPS3, then I eventually asked if he could reprogram a 3S for me and that's when I got ghosted.

I generally agree with you on the repro point, but DS & Mitsu do periodically have periods where they don't have stock, and I don't think anyone is chomping at the bit for a New Generation cart. Like Jojo, I once sat on a original battery cart that I was basically giving away for over a year, nobody wanted it.

You can run any game with a cart, doesn't matter which. I ran 3S for years with an original Jojo cart. Look into CPS3 ISO Converter.

Sorry for the OT, but isn't that a super low price?
I really don't know what these are worth. They sell for a lot on forums and ebay ($1000+) so I guess they are worth that yet they come up for a lot less on yahoo actions japan from time to time.

With YAJ there are risks like buying a faulty item, surface mail is slow it could be lost, plus there will most likely be import fees.
The really cheap ones are usually missing a cart, CD drive and at least 1 simm so you would need to add on at least another €300 to buy those items (ultrabios repro cart, 128 simm and bluescsi) but you would end up with a nice CPS3 multi for your efforts.

I've bought 3 mobos with carts and simms fully working for $350 and under on YJA Japanese Mercari. Always the risk of the MB being bad but in all my cases, the battery on the cart was dead.

100% agree on that. @MickyMac , we have some units left. PM if you would like to get a repro.

Can you PM me more about it. Maybe we can contact the guy and get something out of this.

@Darksoft do you have any plans to do the repro cart with the bank switched cd/no-cd bios mod?

I know you are super busy with the neogeo multi right now but there is big demand for your ultrasimms. Maybe even a v2 with an oled game selector?

There was a thread from the late 2000s on SRK that was discussing an ebay listing about reviving dead Asia region CPS3 carts. I suppose someone had the hardware and keys to do so, but nothing is known about that either.

I think I vaguely remember this, AFAIK it was a service tech for Capcom Asia (not JP) that was providing the service; they could only do Asia NO CD reprogramming, but interestingly I think they had the ability to change any cart to Asia NO CD. The guy I spoke to said he could only do same region, and same game. Wonder what the difference was.
