The hardware seems to match the retail Wii very closely, and even uses the same power brick. I know people have been able to get the triforce games running on Wii via the homebrew channel.

Has anyone investigated this system at all? I can barely find any info on it. The few sources I see say Tatsunoko vs Capcom was the only title released, but this unit belonged to an electromechanical hybrid Mario Party game.

Can't help with your question but got one of my own.
What storage medium do games for this platform come on?

Not sure myself. I think the system has 512MB of internal flash memory like the retail Wii, so I think the game software is stored on that.

The unit in that thread is indeed one of the Mario Party coin pusher games, they confirmed it further down in the thread. There's several of those that run on the RVL arcade board. I think TVC was the only "joystick" (lever) based game.

I don't think anyone has done any serious RE work on this platform. The MAME driver (?) has some stuff documented I think.

That thing flopped hard. I think there were 2 mario games and the capcom.
It is too bad the mario games are mostly physical so impossible to preserve to play.

I believe it was three games based on mp8, but yeah you're still right.

One of them was dumped, but they haven't figured out the io to get beyond the attract screen

What's interesting to me is that at some point they planned to license the hardware to Sega and namco as well, the same two companies that they partnered with for the triforce. I wonder if this was planned as a cheaper alternative

TVC was dumped a long time ago but you couldn't run it because something something encryption. My understanding of this may be slightly off, but that's the gist of it, I think. The recent development to my understanding was the encryption was finally cracked so now it can be played in Dolphin.

This also led to the previously unknown unlock codes being discovered.

I've got one of the Mario Popcorn boards. Is there any info on how to use this to dump my board?

From the sparse readme.txt,

"Extract the files onto some SD card
The system will then automatically dump the keys and the NAND to the SD card

If the system boots normally the SD card is incompatible, non HC cards seem to work best."

I'm a little afraid to run it myself without more info. I think I may have one of the other undumped mp games, and remember people bricking retail Wiis doing homebrew back in the day. Currently looking for an email to contact crediar but may have to create an account at wiibrew to get in touch.

I had no idea there was a popcorn machine running on the RVA. Do you know what it was called in Japan?

ah maybe it wasn't a popcorn machine but the translation is:
"Mario Party Mysterious CoroCoro Catcher"

Would also love to know if I can re-flash it with TVC after I dump the NAND.

I think only coro coro catcher 2 has been dumped so you may have the undumped one. Or I should say part of it, because the main unit and satellite seem to be distinct images based on the sequel.

I am wondering the same thing about converting mine to a TvC once dumped. Crediar is also the dev behind wadimporter for retail Wiis, but I imagine the software would have to be tweaked to interface with the RVA.

TVC Conversions should be fun times - how would we even distinguish between a real one and a conversion?
I mean probably just the sicker would be the only differentiator at that point.

I'm perfectly happy with this. TVC is overpriced and these Metal Game units are practically worthless otherwise.

The only opened TvC I can find online has this unpopulated port that doesn't appear in mine or any other MP medal games I've seen.

So that could potentially be a good differentiator if it appears in all the TvC units. The serial number also follows a different format containing a letter in the first three digits which is not something I've ever seen with all the MP medal units I've observed.

And this is totally unrelated but I found it interesting that the Wii development kits had the same black plastic box to house the WiFi antenna, and next to it a coaxial port to attach wired wiimotes. Then the RVA similarly has a hole labeled RF placed nearby that is plugged.

So they likely had plans at some point to allow a wired wiimote connection. Maybe it would be a port to plug in your own to take advantage of the limited storage space the wiimote had to unlock stuff in the arcade version of games. I wonder if that was the original intended method to unlock the extra characters in TvC.

I just checked my MP board and it is indeed missing the connector and has no letters in the serial number.
