Here is my project of a HOTAS flight stick panel using two Gundam joysticks !

First things first, this project is heavily influenced by @nnap 's After Burner Climax Panel Reproduction who did an absolutely awesome design with his throttle stick handle. Huge kudos to him !

Basically the story goes the same, I bought a pair of blue Gundam sticks, used one for a Monkey Ball panel, and planned to use the other to make the same panel as nnap, using a Sega analog joystick.
Wierdly, one had that red trigger, so I decided to keep it.

I got the Sega analog stick, but I did not really like it. I think its travel course is too short to give that satisfying feeling of pushing the throttle.

So I realized that the Gundam stick had the perfect travel, and the shape is pretty accurate for a Throttle stick, and it already has lots of buttons, so I just needed another one. But when I saw these sticks started comming in grey from the Senjo no Kizuna 2 cabs, I did not hesitate and basically bought another pair. Those used sticks are extremely inexpensive compared to their retail price, and they are not that old so grab them while you can.

As for the games, I wanted to replicate the controls of Sega Strike Fighter, on Naomi, as it has the most controls in flight games, as far as I know (Airline pilots excluded, as it requires a double throttle). And I could use it with Mame to emulate other flight games with less controls.

The controls are:
-1 flight stick with missile and cannon
-1 throttle stick with Air Brake button
-2 rudder pedals that are basically 1 analog axis rotating
-1 4 way joystick to look around the plane
-Start and View change buttons

As the Throttle Stick only moves Up/Down, and the Rudder pedals only move Left-Right, I decided that the left analog stick would be used for both axis. One for Throttle, one for Rudder.

At first I also wanted to add a 4 way joystick, but I ended up using the 2 addition buttons on each stick. As one is positionned straight, the buttons are great for Left-Right view; and the left stick is sorta horizontal, they can be used for Up-Down.

Also, for all the other games that don't require the rudder axis, and a simple throttle stick, I designed and had 3D printed a restrictor to make the analog stick only 1 Way. Works great !

Illuminated buttons for Start and View will come soon, but it already works great !

As for the wiring, I followed this wiring diagram:
https://segaretro.org/images/4/43/SegaStrikeFighter_NAOMI_US_DigitalWiringDiagram_Deluxe.pdf

As you can see, the cabinet also uses the same SEGA 839-1187 Pot amp board as Monkey Ball for the joystick. And just like Monkey Ball, it is not required with the Gundam Sticks's originial pots. I tried with the pot amp board I have for my Monkey Ball panel, and I think it actually creates more issues than it solves, so I'd suggest to just not use it,

I'll be using illuminated buttons for the Change View and Start buttons, as they can blink during gameplay. The diagram also shows some Warning lights that blink when you're being chased by a missile. You can see them here

. Unfortunately, those lights are specific to the SDX version of the game and are not present in the single-monitor version of the game. They can not be tested in the test menu either. Too bad, it would have been cool on the panel !

When connected to the NNC front panel connecotrs, it gives this:

Amazing work! Makes me wonder if I should switch over to a gundam stick too for throttle.

The lamp outputs are nice. On Afterburner Climax you also have lights. I added them around the speakers with special brackets.

Funny enough Monkey Ball also supports an illuminated start button but it is a standard button on the original panel.

I'd definitely recommend to change to a Gundam stick. It feels MUCH better than the Sega analog stick imho.

The angled handle feels a bit awkward though, and it is a bit higher than the flight stick. Adapting your throttle handle design to this stick would certainly make a huge improvement for the games that would only use it for throttle and no rudder. 😁

But the additional buttons of the gundam sticks are cool too, and might be useful for playing more games.

I'd like to bring to your attention that, even if not tested, if one would make a panel with two angled joysticks set as throttle with the restrictors, that panel would look kinda like this:

😁

Yeah, it should work, but chances of finding a working Hikaru without the dedicated cab are low. And as far as Hikaru is concerned, the panel should also work for Planet Harrier.

I'll check with emulation, but last time I checked, the Hikaru emulation has not moved a bit for the last decade. 😐

I've put some placeholder buttons until I get the illuminated ones. I'll try posting a video soon.

Looks sick!
I was able to source an original ab climax flightstick for my panel. Even the little rumble motor works.

Niiiice! Not only does it have that tiny rumble feature, but it's vastly superior in terms of ergonomics imo! Please share a picture of your panel as it is now 😁

The flight stick of the Star Wars Battle Pod cabinet is of the same kind, also with a rumble, but mounted to the side of the grip.

I'll stick to my gundam stick for now, as it has more buttons, but I may try and design a more ergonomic handle. Some day.

By the way I should be able to play the Star Wars game from sega Model 1 and 3 emulation with this panel, gonna have to try that.

Very nice! What do you use to convert the controls to mame? Just a JVS2USB?

I was wondering when someone would eventually ask that question. 😁

I am using a prototype of a new JVS to USB converter that is currently being developed by HFSPlay, with plenty of features to be announced soon 🥳
