I figured it would be fun to see which games push/are most intensive for the hardware.

Mainly curious on the cps2 & cps1 but if anyone has answers on any of the others I would be interested too.

SF3 3rd strike on CPS3 is pretty much the pinnacle of 2D sprite work. Capcom were at the peak of their power, had a powerhouse (in-house) sprite monster and every pixel artist was fighting to work on it. Truly the last and best of its kind.

DDSOM on CPS2 was about as complex as it’s possible to make an arcade game, and still be successful. A huge hit with the fans, operators must have hated it. amazing 4 player action, I still find the odd secret and Easter egg.

And of course the “vampire” series. An awesome unique property bought to life, still one of the most graphically lush fighters available

Wasn't it "memory" limits really the issue with most of these though as it was so expensive, definitely for cps1 anyways ,remember reading that things being cut due to memory constraints back then .
Mighy pang I'm fairly sure pushes the hardware in panic mode and MY memory could be suffering here but has a bit of slowdown if screen is packed.

Progear’s Stage 2 boss (second form) also comes to mind with regard to slowdown. I read in an interview some years back that Joker Jun’s team had a tough time programming the game due to CPS2’s hardware limitations.

What about Street Fighter 2 Dash? They had to overclock the Cpu to get it running right, wouldn't that be the definition of of pushing the Hardware?

quite hard question, because it was unknown CPS 2 or 1 hardware limitations until few years ago, when CPS-2 chips was reverse engineered, so I'd say there very few people on this planet who have good understanding which was actual power/limits of CPS1 and 2 platforms, and they aren't on this forum.
sure, you may assume "if some game have slowdowns - then it use all the hardware capabilities". but... this can also be vise versa, because of bad programming or stupid software design.

as of CPS-3 - we still have no idea about capabilities and limits of this platform. so, yes SFIII 3rd strike looks great, but we have no any idea how much of CPS-3 power it uses and how effectively.
