Hey everyone,

Recently picked up an Animal Kaiser cab that I plan to convert to a small form factor 2-player MAME machine. I will be gutting the cab and then installing a GroovyMAME PC + an ipac. I love these little form factor candy style cabs, and I was very excited when I found one locally for a decent price.

The Animal Kaiser game was booting to the test menu fine, but it had no IC card, so it couldn't actually boot and play the game. I had no plans to do anything with the game anyway, as it is a kids based card game that I have no interest in.

If anyone knows of people who would want to buy Animal Kaiser parts, I have a bunch stripped from this cab. Marquee plastics, original board, card reader, card dispenser etc. etc. No need for them, and I'd prefer they go to someone who might want them. I live in Australia, but happy to box up and post the parts if the price is fair.

The cabinet has a 17inch wei-ya 15khz pure flat monitor. Sadly, it has some decent screen burn, but when a game is running, it's hardly noticeable. I was very pleased to see that the monitor gets a great image and also has a direct VGA style input, which is perfect for using a MAME machine. No stuffing around with things like a J-PAC, just a direct connection from the PC to the monitor. The images posted are without a video amplifier, but the brightness and contrast of the monitor are cranked to max. I might end up grabbing an Ultimarc video amp to see what kind of difference it makes in the image.

The difficult part of this project will be getting the control panel fabricated. I plan to get a stainless steel panel made that covers over the entire top of the control panel housing. I will then get some Namco Exceleena CP artwork scaled to fit it. As the cab is Namco, and also the same colour as the Exceleena, I think that this is appropriate. I am visiting a mate who works in steel fabrication later this week to get him to start on the CP for me. He is confident that he will be able to make something that fits well and looks the goods.

An easy first step was to start gutting the cab. I removed most of the internals, just leaving the boards in the back, which are the audio amp, IO board and the power stuff. I am going to sell the rest of the internal parts as a bulk lot. I also jammed a small form facor Dell PC in there to test that it fits ok.

I removed the sample cards from the marquee display and instead I have printed out tiny version of Neo Geo mini-marquees to replace them. I chose them based on my favourite Neo Geo multiplayer games.

Next step is to build a new MAME machine and wire up the IPAC. Will likely be a while until I get that done, but I am on holidays in a week or so, and it will make for a good holiday project. I will update when I have the control panel made, which will also likely take a while.

Really glad to see other people making AK conversions as there are still a number of them out in the wild, I’ve been holding off on showing anything I’ve done but I’ve actually converted two of these already and have another two sat about two metres away from me that I plan to start doing this weekend.

Are you entirely removing the old control panel upper as if you are - I’d like to salvage it from you if possible.

I went a slightly different route to you as I wanted the ability to revert them to AK cans if the desire came over me.

Firstly I designed some panels that use the excellena design scheme but fit into the existing two button area - it’s tight but it works

I’ve also done a bunch of move strips for a few games that fit under the move strip glass, attached is the MVS one which requires 30mm holes to be drilled through the plastic underneath the monitor but allows for bigger 1 and 2p start as well as a game change button, I’ve not cut it yet but I’ve also allowed for the credit LED space, I’ve basically designed it around the look of the SC-19 but kept the aesthetics of the original Animal Kaiser cabinet warning stickers.

Added a 1p/2p start to go over the insert card decal and I’ve also made panels for both Naomi and MVS memory cards to be used from the old card vend section

Anyway, lovely to see someone doing the same as they’re really sturdy little things!

Wow, that looks great! Mine won't look anywhere near that professional. I have gone a different path, as my machine was never intended to be used again as an Animal Kaiser machine, so I didn't need to save any of the internal parts, or control panel style. I got the cab itself for $350AUD, then sold the stripped internal parts for $250AUD to a buyer who wanted spares. So the cab is a very cheap project for me.

I have got a stainless steel panel cut and bent to shape to fit over the blue plastic CP housing. I removed the card reader stuff entirely, to have more space across the entire panel to accommodate a 6 button 2-player CP layout. When I get the CP with buttons and sticks in it, I will put it on the cab and take a photo to post here. However, it's not gonna look anywhere near as good as yours does. Mine will be a much more amateur job.

I am interested in what you did to get the artwork strip in there. As far as I can tell, there is no way to remove the artwork that is in there already, it seems to be moulded into the monitor surround.

Thanks dude, I really wanted them to look like they had some sort of universal design to them - as in they were designed to be modular and not just for Animal Kaiser (which to be fair apart from the control panel upper there really isn't much that is game specific to the cabinet).
The movestrip glass is held in by 2 retaining clips which are screwed into the rear of the monitor bezel, remove them and the whole movestrip part comes out. From what I've seen some of the machines had a sticker which was placed over the glass and original artwork, yours could be like that - if not the artwork should still be removable, you'll just need to figure out a way to mount in a piece of 3mm perspex.

Looking at your picture again it could be that your move strip art has been stuck directly to the bezel, if so you'll need to find the clips like i said and have a piece of acrylic cut to size.
Alternatively, using a company like sticker mule you could get a really cheap movestrip designed and printed yourself. I've done it for a couple of the games in mine
