I am going from memory but I think error 1 is a region issue with the game.

Finally figured this out after tracing out both sync lines I eventually came to two tiny 68ohm resistors on the bottom of the board one for each sync, one was fine but the other read 2.6k ohms. I took a replacement from a junk board and it is now 100%. Looks like when the diode shorted it cooked...

I've made some progress, the vsync pulse is there but it's not right after comparing it to a working board on the oscope. I got a very poor image when wiring it up to a 15khz arcade monitor which of course doesn't sync but at least I can see it's working and passes all ram tests so just this one...

As I said the 4.01 update disc won't update a non net dimm no matter what firmware version it is running.

From a gdrom disc, the same way you officially updated triforce, chihiro and yes even naomi net dimms. :)

Any chance of you documenting your fix @Tailsnic Retroworks ? interesting stuff, I am guessing this is why Sega didn't officially support 4.01 firmware on non net dimm boards.

Has anyone tried updating the stock firmware on a china made jvs usb adapter? it only works on certain Naomi motherboards with the firmware it came with, doesn't work on the early models so I'm looking to fix that. I tried flashing it on the webpage but it doesn't seem to detect it.

It has to 'create' the RGB from a composite signal as it's just a standard famicom with the case removed. so yeah it's not going to look great. You could install something like a nesrgb if you wanted to make it perfect. :)
